I Made Birthday Cards. They're Not Nice. You're Welcome.

Let me tell you what I could not find anywhere.

A birthday card for my friend that sounded like something a real person would say. Not precious. Not glittery. Not aggressively crude. Just honest. A little dry. The kind of thing you'd actually say to someone you've known long enough to stop pretending with.

I looked. I looked at Hallmark. I looked at Target. I looked at those boutique card shops where everything costs $8 and smells like a candle.

Nothing.

Everything was either:

— Sweet to the point of being meaningless — Trying so hard to be edgy it hurt — Written for someone who has never actually met the person they're giving it to

So I made them myself. Obviously.

22 birthday cards. For women who are done being soft about it.

Not a single balloon emoji. Not one sparkle. Just the thing you've been thinking, said out loud, on a card, ready to send.

Here's a sample of what's inside:

"Getting older sucks. Do whatever you want. You've earned it."

"Another year older. Another year tolerating absolutely less of everyone else's drama. Good."

"He was looking for 'this' guy. There was no guy. You always get the joke. Happy Birthday."

"You're eating the cake. You're skipping the guilt. You've earned both. Happy Birthday."

"Still not explaining yourself. Still not shrinking. Still here. Good."

You see what I mean. These exist now.

And here's the part that makes them different from every card at Target:

You don't print them. You don't mail them. You don't even leave the couch.

Every card comes in two versions — a dark version perfect for texting, screensavers, or sending digitally, and a clean white version made for printing at home or at any print shop. Download once and decide how you want to use it.

Frame it. Text it. Email it. Set it as your lock screen for your own birthday. Post it to Instagram Stories.

No envelope. No stamp. No last-minute panic at Walgreens.

The card arrives the second you buy it.

Obviously.

The full set of 22 cards is available now in the State the Obvious shop on Etsy.

Because some things just need to be said. And somebody has to say them.

State the Obvious — where quiet parts get said out loud. Obviously.
